Development Tip of the Quarter: Four Practical Questions to Ask Before You Use AI

November 1, 2026/Nonprofits, Tips and Resources
Helpful Tips

As nonprofits increasingly adopt AI tools, clear guidelines can help protect the organization, its mission, and the people it serves. The most important starting point is ensuring that any AI guidelines reflect the organization’s values, mission, and ethical standards. Technology should support the work of a nonprofit and not compromise its principles.

Before using AI in your work, ask yourself these four practical questions:

  • Lock Lock

Is this a secure environment for the information I’m using?

Never enter confidential, personally identifiable, or HIPAA-protected health information (PHI) into unapproved AI tools. Protect client records, donor information, and other sensitive data.

  • Check Check

    Have I verified the results?

AI can make mistakes. Independently review AI-generated content, facts, citations, and conclusions before using or sharing them.

  • Search Search

Am I transparent about how I use AI?

Determine how and when to disclose AI use and be prepared to explain how it contributed to your work.

  • User User

Is a person accountable for the outcome?

AI should support and not replace human judgment. Make sure someone is responsible for reviewing and approving the final work.

A practical tip: Develop clear organizational guidelines that identify approved AI tools, protect sensitive information, and establish expectations for responsible use. A thoughtful approach helps your nonprofit benefit from AI while maintaining the trust of the people and communities it serves.
