Development Tip of the Quarter: Stop Treating Every Donor the Same

August 5, 2026/Tips and Resources
Helpful Tips

Every donor gives for their own reasons. Some are passionate about your mission, others are inspired by a specific program, and some simply respond to a timely appeal. Yet many nonprofits send the same messages to every supporter.

A one-size-fits-all approach can make donors feel like just another name on a mailing list. Instead, use the information you already have to create more personalized stewardship.

A few simple ways to get started:

  • Check Check

    Segment by giving history.

First-time donors, recurring donors, and major donors each need different communications.

  • Check Check

    Pay attention to interests.

If someone consistently gives to a specific program or campaign, send updates that reflect that passion.

  • Check Check

    Recognize engagement.

Volunteers, event attendees, and newsletter readers may appreciate different messages than donors who only give online.

  • Check Check

    Adjust your ask.

Loyal supporters may be ready for a recurring gift invitation, while new donors may simply need to see the impact of their first contribution.

While there are many sophisticated ways to segment donor demographics, personalization doesn’t have to be complicated or intimidating. Even a few basic donor segments will help you send more relevant messages, build stronger relationships, and keep your donors around longer.

When donors feel understood and appreciated, they’re much more likely to stay connected to your mission.
